DAILY SCHEDULE OF OUTCOMES
DAY 1, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22.Drawing in black and white, using black pastel sticks. The great thing about drawing is that it is about line and tone. Today’s workshop will concentrate on line and tone enabling students to transform the landscape they see around them into works of art on paper.
DAY 1, SESSION 1The morning session will invigorate the students with a series of warm up exercises to get the mind and body into a creative flow. Drawing with black pastel sticks, students will learn to access the right side of the brain, the creative side, in an effort to free up and really explore their personal creative ability. Dave will show students practical techniques in line and tone, to allow them to create shapes and forms of interest.
DAY 1, SESSION 2The afternoon session will be a continuation of drawing in black and white, but moving away from the studio environment and drawing ‘plein air’ if weather permits. This is a workshop in landscape drawing and the students will be surrounded by the beautiful and spectacular landscape of the Lost World Valley. Students will be encouraged to find elements in the landscape that are of personal interest, whether it is a grand sweeping view of the mountains or the intricate detail of a mossy rock in the creek bed.
DAY 2, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23Moving into colour. Once the basic concepts of line and tone are understood, it becomes a lot easier to move into colour and create depth and emotion. Today Dave will introduce students to colour with the use of pastel (dry chalk sticks).
DAY 2, SESSION 1The pastel sticks the students will be using are the same shape and form as the black pastel sticks, so it is a natural progression, moving into colour. Dave will demonstrate practical techniques in using this versatile medium.
DAY 2, SESSION2The afternoon will be time for the students to think about what part of the landscape they want to portray and begin their final piece. By now they have the skills in combining line and tone and the ability to work with coloured pastels in a variety of ways. Dave will be able to guide them through the process of creating a large coloured landscape drawing that combines these techniques with each student’s own unique style.
DAY 3, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24The creation of the final works. Depending on the student, some may work on a series of final pieces and some may concentrate on one piece. The inspiration is endless in such a location, so there will be plenty of subject matter to choose from. Dave will spend his time assisting each student with any challenges they may have and help them to think about how they can create works that have energy and balance.
DAY 3, SESSION 1Complete individual drawing.
DAY 3, SESSION 2Complete individual drawing.
DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT TO BE COMPLETED BY STUDENTThe aim of this 3 day workshop is to produce a series of drawings in black and white, which are practice and study pieces, as well as at least one colour pastel drawing. Some students may produce more colour work, depending on the size and how they like to work.Dave will recommend students do there final work on quality watercolour paper that is 57cm  x 77cm in size. Of course the students have a choice of what size work they complete. As with any type of drawing, if the students want to hang the finished work at home, it will need to be framed. Framing is not part of the workshop, but Dave will be happy to give students advice on how to frame the work and will show how to easily transport the work home so that it is not damaged.
LIST OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED FREE BY TUTOR FOR THE WORKSHOPDave will have some large rulers, pestle and mortar (for grinding pastels) and some reference books that can be used by the students.
LIST OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO BE SUPPLIED BY STUDENTS (if possible/applicable please list sources and approximate costs)Board to draw on. Essential for when we draw outdoors. The most economical board is a piece of particle board, masonite or MDF that is 60cm x 80cm (big enough to attached large sheets of paper to). Unless you want a textured effect, make sure it has a very smooth surface. A hardware store such as Bunnings will have different types of boards and will probably cut them to size if needed. Approx cost – $10A camping chair or stool to sit on.Not essential as plastic chairs will be provided, that can be used indoors and outdoors, but you may prefer to bring your own. Make sure it allows easy movement to draw.A portable easel. Not essential, but if you have a lightweight easel that can be easily moved around and can support a drawing board, it allows you to draw standing up if you prefer.Pestle and mortar – Not essential, but Dave will demonstrate how you can grind and mix pastel colours that can then be applied to the paper to create large planes of specific colour. Remember that if you bring your herb pestle and mortar, it will probably never be the same colour!Ruler– not essential, but Dave will only have a few with him, so handy to have your own.Shallow plastic container – To put pastels, erasers, smudge sticks, etc in when we are outdoors. We will have enough plastic chairs to be able to use some as supports for pastels and drawing equipment when outdoors.

LIST OF MATERIALS SUPPLIED FREE BY THE TUTOR FOR THE WORKSHOPDave will have a limited number of pencils, erasers, smudgers, tape, fixative and bluetac (for attaching paper to the drawing boards), available for students to use during the course.
LIST OF MATERIALS TO BE SUPPLIED BY STUDENTS Pastels Chalk pastels, not oil pastels!  Square shaped, not round, as it gives you more variation for drawing thickness. Please try to bring either Faber-Castel (about $3.30 each) or conte (about $2.70 each). Faber castel are a bit bigger, but either works fine. There are cheaper versions available, but you get what you pay for.You will need a range of colours. It is up to you what colours you bring, but the following is a good selection for landscape work – white x 2, black x 2, cream, yellow, yellow/orange, tan, reddish brown, dark brown, red, light pink, reddish purple, lilac, dark purple, light sky blue, cobalt blue, dark blue, light grey, dark grey, lime green, light leaf green, dark leaf green. This is general list and you could make it more basic or more varied. Remember that although you can blend colours using pastels, it’s not like oil painting where you can mix pretty well any colour from a few primaries. You will need a good selection.Paper – You will need basic paper to do practice black and white and study drawings on. This can be anything from simple photocopy  paper to heavier acid free drawing paper. You can get a good A3 size acid free booklet of 30 -50 sheets from art shops for between $10 and  $25. Booklets are good because you can leave the pages intact in the booklet and use the cardboard backing as support when drawing. I recommend at least 20 sheets. For the final pastel piece, I recommend a quality sheet of waterclour paper . The paper should be about 300G/M2(thickness) and have a slightly textured surface. I use Arches Feuilles Grain Fin – Cold Pressed 300G/M2, 56cm x 76cm. (about $10 per sheet) Of course you  may want to bring more than one sheet to give yourself the option of doing more than one finished piece.Eraser.

Cotton buds.

Pencil – 2B

Smudge sticks (rolled up paper sticks for blending)

2 or 3 rags (to wipe fingers and hands clean of pastel).
