This event is an initiative of the Lost World Valley Community, the Garden Hill at lost World Gallery and Museum and the Beaudesert and District Community Arts Projects

DURATION OF WORKSHOP – 4 days                                     COST – $280 + materials and equipment
STATUS OF STUDENT – available for beginners or those with some experience – maximum 8
DAILY SCHEDULE OF OUTCOMES
DAY 1, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
DAY 1, SESSION 1 Student and tutor introductions and guided group meditation. Introduction to stone carving tools – hand, pneumatic and power tools/ learning to read stone i.e. grain, colourations and form, and working with them to create a successful sculpture. Creating a clay maquette (model) using found objects found in nature as a starting point. Selection of stones 
DAY 1, SESSION 2 Introduction to various techniques of stone sculpture. Commence carving using hand tools. (N.B. The students will have access to a library of sculpture books for extra inspiration) Review of works in progress (if required).  
DAY2, THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 22
DAY 2, SESSION 1 Group meditation. Recommencement of carving sculptures using hand and pneumatic tools.  
DAY 2, SESSION2 Recommencement of carving sculptures. Review and group discussion of day’s progress.  
DAY 3, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
DAY 3, SESSION 1 Group meditation. Recommencement of carving sculptures – reflecting upon, and evaluating progress thus far.  
DAY 3, SESSION 2 Recommencement of carving sculptures. Reflecting upon, and evaluating application of skills, and creative responses. Review and group discussion of day’s progress.  
DAY 4, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
DAY 4, SESSION 1 Group meditation. Recommencement of carving sculptures. Sanding and completion of works.  
DAY 4, SESSION 2 Recommencement of carving sculptures. Completion and display of stone sculptures.  
DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT TO BE COMPLETED BY STUDENT The student will be able to complete a simple stylised stone sculpture of modest proportions (able to be carried by one, or at the most, two people).  
LIST OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED FREE BY TUTOR FOR THE WORKSHOPHand and pneumatic tools will be available on loan for this workshop, to be shared amongst the students. 

 

 

 

LIST OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO BE SUPPLIED BY STUDENTS (if possible/applicable please list sources and approximate costs)(A) Carving tools. A kit of basic hand tools, sufficient for this workshop is available from the tutor for $35.(B) A good quality dust mask

(C) Good quality safety specs

(D) Good quality hand gloves

(E) Closed shoes

(F) Ear muffs/protection

(G) Sketchpad and drawing utensils

LIST OF MATERIALS TO BE SUPPLIED BY STUDENTS (if possible/applicable please list sources and approximate costs)(A) Sandstone – the tutor will supply blocks of Helidon sandstone for between $15 and $25 per block depending on size. Additional blocks will be available during (and at the end of) the workshop.
